When designer facing a meidcal problem and hoping to use digital ways to solve it, it is hard at most of time. We need to understand the context and find out what aspect could be considered containing potential opportunities. Here is a case study of digital intervention of Medicine Translational Research.

Match Maker

Context of the Problem

Translational medicine, also called translational medical science, preclinical research, evidence-based research, or disease-targeted research, area of research that aims to improve human health and longevity by determining the relevance to human disease of novel discoveries in the biological sciences.

Translational Research could accelerate the most effective medicine to be used in the market. In order to realize this purpose, researchers and participants, both of who are essential, are required to contribute on this area. Even with the rapid development of medicine, it seems that we are not well-prepared to deal with all kinds of health problems.

Storyboard

Through the research, we found all the factors in 2nd research that can't be handled with by us; but according to user groups, we could have following opportunity space:

  • Provide users with information that matches their own needs, help users search, and guide them.

  • Provide users with an online communication community platform.

  • Based on the user's geographic location, the desired return, and convenient means of participation recommend trials that users are most likely to participate in.

Secondary Research

We mainly conducted secondary research, including papers and reports provided by our professor Santosh Basapur, Director of Design at Rush University Medical Center, as the starting point.

Key Takeaways:

  • Student-based seminar, groups and Q&A events are the best way to help not only young students know more about translational research and then attract them into this field, but also give student researchers a sense of achievement.

  • Incorporate into capstone and dual-degree are effective to send talents into this field.

HMW help attract more people into translational researchm and provide the right information for them with different purposes?

User groups

Three typologies of user

Initial assumption & team focus

Is it said that people are not willing to participate in Translational Research?

What would student/young people’s participation in translational research be like?
How might we digitally transform (increase) the participation?

The Solution

In order to accelerate the whole process of translational research, we proposed Matchmaker, an APP platform with all needed information, which can help more people, students, researchers quickly participate in the field.
